There are tons of things that can be wrong, but, often it falls into one of these categories. Many problems don't require getting a new computer or upgrading.
- over time extra files and configurations could be bogging it down (cache/temp files, obsolete registry entries, ad-ware, virus)
- too many programs in the startup folder
- one or more programs hogging up all the resources (virus software, etc.)

- not enough memory (RAM)

- not enough disk space (hard drive)
- faulty hardware (not as likely)
- etc.
